West Portal
West Portal has maintained a pristine appearance and old-fashioned charm that often make a westbound trip through the Muni streetcar tunnel feel more like a time warp. A stroll down West Portal Avenue reveals an abundance of today’s conveniences, including groceries, quirky gift shops, popular restaurants, and even a historic first-run movie theater. But little details, like the tree-lined streets, vintage neon signs and heavy pedestrian traffic serve as reminders that life moves a little more slowly here, despite the constant rumbling of streetcars headed downtown. The homes in West Portal and nearby Forest Hill Extension are a lovely mix of mostly single family properties; they are, for the most part, very well maintained and highly desirable. While the commercial district along the Avenue is becoming more and more popular again, the residential streets are still very quiet, offering a suburban feel in the center of the city. A playground, rec center and the West Portal branch of the public library are all within walking distance of each other and the Muni station, making this a highly desirable destination for parents with active kids. Locals also relish strolls in nearby Stern Grove, a 33-acre park that is home to an annual free outdoor concert series. Venturing up the hill into Forest Hill Extension reveals wonderful views; and this neighborhood is fortunate to get more sun than one might expect due to its proximity to the Sunset district.
